Here’s an old Dru Down flyer from 1996 that Phunky Phat Graph-X whipped up for a show at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, to promote his album Can You Feel Me.
For those of you who did make it to this show eighteen years ago, I hope you got to see the opening act, Mac Dre R.I.P.
Cross Colours launched in 1989 and was one of the first companies to make urban gear fashionable with affordable brightly colored T-shirts, over-sized jackets, hats and baggy pants each accompanied with messages like “Stop D Violence” and “Educate 2 Elevate.”
Rappers such as Dr. Dre & Snoop Doggy Dogg latched onto the stuff, which helped establish a fashion market based around black inner-city youth.
The advertisement you see below depicts Cross Colours at its very best. Once Will Smith started wearing it on his TV series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the brand began to loose its iconic style.

Slick Ricks brilliant word play and effortless ability to bring life to the stories he rhymed about using hilarious one-liners makes him one of the wittiest rapper of all time.
Slick Rick, who only had one eye and was born in South London, rose to stardom in an era known to fans as the golden age of hip hop. His flamboyant lifestyle and outrageous amounts of gold jewelry made him a target even in his own Bronx stomping grounds.
In the limousine photo below, Slick Rick is sporting too many pieces of eccentric jewelry to count, all of which are an absolute necessity and their importance should not be taken lightly.

Ruthless Records sent out these $5 food coupons as promotional material for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s second studio album, “E. 1999 Eternal.”
This food stamp was a great idea since one of their hit singles was titled “1st Of Tha Month” which not only celebrates the arrival of welfare checks, but for drug dealers like Bone Thugs, it’s payday and time to smoke weed and ride around with the top down.
Fesu is from the streets of Greenspoint in Houston, Texas. He first came to national attention when he became Source Magazine’s ‘Unsigned Hype’ in May of 1993.
After signing to Continuum Records in 1994, his EP “Blind Cripple And Crazy” was expanded to a full length album under the title “War With No Mercy” and distributed on a national level.
The advertisement below was promoting his debut album with the warning “Hard Music For Hard People.”
By Any Means Necessary was an underground rap group from the 17th ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. They released their music on the label Alliv Records, which was owned by producer and entrepreneur Donald “Duck” Coleman.
The black & white glossy promotional photo below shows the group trapping outside of their local liquor store drinking forty’s and smoking cigarettes. The spray paint on the trash can is great representation of the neighborhood they live in.
The same photo above was also used for their self titled tape released in 1991. Thanks to YouTube we were able to dig up the track titled “Ashes 2 Dust.” Check it out!
Big Daddy Kane started his career in 1986 as a member of the rap group the Juice Crew, founded by producer Marley Marl and radio DJ Mr. Magic. With his new school lyrics, choreography and tailored costumes he revolutionized hip hop fashion and the way shows were performed, proving that he was not only an MC, but a full entertainer.
Digital Underground is acting a fool in this Spice! Magazine photo. From Shock G’s zany white hat, to the airbrushed jean jacket, you can tell hip hop fashion has come a long way.
If you look hard enough you can spot 2Pac throwing up a fist of 4 gold rings in the back. Thug life!
